    LA Cupcake Review

Recently, the cupcake craze in Los Angeles has been exploding with cupcake bakeries on almost every corner.  With so many places to go, how do you decide which place is best?  We’ve decided to take matters into our own hands – and mouths – and tried different Red Velvet Cupcakes from different places.  We tasted cupcakes from the following places:

    Coral Tree Café

    Tender Greens

    Sprinkles

    Famous Cupcakes

    Kiss My Bundt

    Babycakes

Our favorite Red Velvet Cupcake, of course, was from SPRINKLES!  But, we also couldn’t help but admire Babycakes.  It is a vegan bakery located in Downtown Los Angeles that opened up on January 2, 2010.  This is the second location for Babycakes, with the first one located in New York City.

Some of the great things about the cupcake is the fact that it is vegan so it’s a healthier choice if you feel like indulging in a sweet treat.  It is gluten free, egg free, dairy/casein free, soy-free, wheat-free, agave-sweetened, spelt and kosher.

One of the admiring things about the cupcake was the packaging.  It came in a really cute light pink cardboard box with a clear plastic window on top to display the cupcake; simple, sweet, pink and makes you feel happy – kind of like a baby.

When we asked the owner why of all locations in Los Angeles did you choose to be in downtown and he simply said “it just felt like home.”

Downtown LA has slowly been emerging with many things to see and places to go. And the nightlife is definitely reminiscent to the streets of NYC.  Babycakes is definitely an upgrade for your taste buds!

    The Ballet Is In Town!

Joffrey Ballet is coming to Los Angeles with their production of Cinderella at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion!  This is very exciting considering the fact that here in Los Angeles, we don’t have many opportunities to say, “I'm going to the ballet tonight.”

Joffrey Ballet is a premier dance company that started in Los Angeles then moved to New York and now calling Chicago their home.  They will only be here in Los Angeles from January 28-January 31.

Tickets can range from $45-$150 depending on what kind of seating you’d like.  Tickets are available on Ticketmaster. Also try discount search engines like www.ticketliquidator.com

This can be the perfect idea for an early Valentine’s Day date or to spend quality time with friends and loved ones!

Below is the schedule for Cinderella at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion:

Haiti donations deductible for 2009 taxes

Taxpayers will be able to deduct cash donations to Haiti earthquake relief efforts on their 2009 taxes instead of waiting to file claims next year.

The Senate unanimously passed a bill that makes contributions made between January 12 and February 28, 2010 count toward 2009 taxes.

Donations made via text messages are also tax deductible if cell phone bills are provided as proof of donation.

Haiti relief contributions will count as an itemized charitable deduction. Itemized deductions are typically taken when an individual exceeds the standard deduction.

    • For 2009, the standard deduction for those 65 and under is $11,400 if married filing jointly or a qualifying widow, $8,350 if filing as a head of household, $5,700 if single and $5,700 if married filing separately.
    • If your adjusted gross income for 2009 tops $166,800 or $83,400 if married and filing separately, your charitable contribution is subject to the reduction of itemized contributions, usually 1%.

Please contact your accountant or tax person for more information about this new legislation when you file your taxes.

For more information on this topic please see CNNMoney.

Text messaging isn't the only way to donate.  Donations can also be made online to Red Cross Haiti and Development or Doctors Without Borders.
